Greetings and Introductions Selamlaşma ve tanışma
How to say hello, introduce yourself and say goodbye in Turkish, and when to use "sen" (you, informal) or "siz" (you, formal).
The rule
- Merhaba is the universal "hello" and works in any situation.
- sen = you (informal: friends, children, family). siz = you (formal: strangers, older people, at work). With strangers, always start with siz.
- Introduce yourself: Benim adım Anna. — My name is Anna. Ask: Adınız ne? — What is your name?
- Country + -lı/-li/-lu/-lü = where someone is from: İngiltereliyim — I'm from England, Amerikalıyım — I'm from America.
- When someone says Hoş geldiniz! (Welcome!), the polite answer is always Hoş bulduk!
