Numbers Sayılar

Numbers from 0 to a million, ordinal numbers (first, second) and the key rule: after a number, the noun stays singular.

The rule

  • Turkish numbers are very logical: big numbers are built from small ones like Lego: yirmi beş = 20 + 5 = 25.
  • yüz (100) and bin (1000) are used without "bir" (one): 100 = yüz, 1000 = bin. But 1,000,000 = bir milyon.
  • After a number, the noun is always singular: iki kitap — two books (not kitaplar).
  • Ordinal numbers: number + -ıncı/-inci/-uncu/-üncü: birinci — first, üçüncü — third.
