"To Be": I am a student Ben öğrenciyim
Turkish has no separate word for "am, is, are" in the present. It is a suffix: Ben öğrenciyim — I am a student.
The rule
- Personal endings are added to the noun or adjective: öğretmenim — I am a teacher, yorgunum — I am tired.
- If the word ends in a vowel, a y is added in the 1st person: öğrenciyim — I am a student.
- Negative: değil + ending: Ben doktor değilim — I am not a doctor.
- Pronouns are often dropped because the ending already shows the person: Yorgunum. — I'm tired.
